effects of video games

Video game magazine

Questionnaire analysis

My first question asked the ages of people to see who would answer the questionnaire. My next question was simple asking the gender of the person who was answering the survey. My third question asked what type of genre of games an individual liked playing.
My next question was to see what console or device people liked playing on. It was asked to see the variation in what people play the games on. They question after was regarding the time spent playing games. Many problems with games comes from how addictive the games are. Many people play for than 6 hours in one day. According to ‘Time’ “the average U.S. gamer age 13 or older spent 6.3 hours a week playing video games during 2013”(May 27, 2014, Doug Aamoth).

I wanted to see people’s responses on effects on video games. So I asked if the individual felt frustrated when playing a video game. For my 8th question I asked more on people’s attitude when playing video games and if they released their frustration with violence. Violence and video games have been put together and related every time when incidents happen for example sandy hook massacre. Where video games were blamed for influencing the killer to murder children. This linked to my next question if people thought that violence in games and violence in real life was linked. My next question asked when people were younger if video games impacted them and what it did.

My 11th question asked if video game adverts like trailers had made people want to but the game. This linked to effect of advertisements which can cause people to buy a game after being exposed to it after a long time if someone kept watching it repeatedly. My next question was regarding Audience theory and if there was hidden messages in games that audiences pick up. The next question asked if people who play video games if they relate personal feelings to video games when playing. This question was asked in relation to passive and active consumption.

My 3rd last question is relating to the Uses and gratifications theory, which is about audiences researching and looking into media that matches their needs. The question after asked about how the continent of shooting games effects people and if it puts them off from playing. My last question asked if various shooting games encourage violence.

Form the data received from my questionnaire I found that 75% of my responses where aged between 16-18. My target audience was the majority of the responses. 58% of responses were male and only 42 were female.
When the audience was asked, what type of genre of games do you enjoy? 27% said shooting games was a genre they enjoyed. The next 3 popular genres that were contested were Action, Adventure and strategy. After that at 9% was two other genres that were sports and simulation.  My next question was about what console my audience uses. 75% of people said PS3/4 second came X-box 360/1 and at 8% was P.C.
My next question asked how long the individual played video games had in one day. 33% of responses said 1-3 hours and another set of responses that were 33% said that they played for 4-7 hours. 25% of people said that they played for 8-15 hours. Only a small minority of people around 8% said they played more than 16 hours.
My next set of responses were not sure if they were really frustrated when playing video games.  33% of people replied that they were not sure while only 58% of people said they did feel frustrated.  I then asked if people if they released their frustration when playing video games. 75% of people said that they did. While only 25% of people said that they didn’t.
My next question asked if there was link between shooting games and real life violence. Majority of people by 68% said yes while the remaining responses said no.
I asked if video games had an impact on peoples childhoods 5 responses responded no while 4 people said it did.
My next question was related to effects of advertisements. 67% of people said yes they felt they wanted to buy a game after seeing the advertisements. The question I asked after was if the story of the video game influenced someone purchasing the game. 92% of people said they were influenced by the story of a game into buying one.
I asked the question which related to the Audience theory and if there was hidden messages in games that audiences pick up. 50% of people said yes while only 33% said maybe and only 17% said No.
I then asked if people if they research into games they play. 50% said yes, 42% said no and 8% said in some cases.
I asked if blood and gore in shooting games had put people off when playing. 67% said yes while 25% said no and a small minority of people said in some cases.

My last question I asked if shooting games encourage violence. 3 people responded no. While 5 people said yes and two people were not sure.

From the results gathered I found out that video games effect people differently. There were responses that varied.

Conclusion:
From my analysis I looked for what was demographics of age, gender, social class etc, to find what was the target audience was and how the website was meeting the needs of the target audience. My questionnaire found that all participants were the target audience for the website from the results of the demographic charts shown. I asked questions to see if the website was meeting the selection of contents for example the websites, words, images, colours, fonts etc. I found out from my findings that the website met with this point.

A website has been constructed to show its content. From my results a lot of the feedback was positive on the layout, captions, etc. This show that the website creators met with their target audience’s standard when creating this website.

Looking at the results not many people talked about the linguistic, visual or symbolic features of the website. From this we see that the website creators did not reach out to their target audience from those aspects of the codes and conventions of websites.

Results in the analysis show that the modes of address in the adverts and pictures show us that the audience found them standing out compared to other features. This shows us that in conclusion that most features of the design of the website met with the audiences specific needs.

Media Products & their Audiences – Websites Task 1 - Report

For this task I analysed ‘AliExpress’ a website which is similar to ‘ebay’ and is a part of the Ali Baba company. This website is similar to Amazon and ‘ebay’ in terms of how a seller and buyer can sell and buy from the website and that the website is the mediator for both transactions.
I was asked to make a questionnaire regarding the website I analysed. I decided that I would make a questionnaire talking about the features of the website and how it appeals to people. So I decided to ask a list of questions to see what responses people would give me on their view on the website.

The questions I asked where the following:
The first question was to separate my audiences ages to see the different demographics of age groups.
My next question was to get a better idea on the social class of people who were taking the questionnaire. I wanted to see what type of people would visit the website I was analysing. The next question was asked to see how many people had been on the website before seeing the questionnaire. The about impressions was asked to get a better understating on how the website was seen by people when they first went on the website.
My Next question on navigation was an important question because it related to the construction of the website. To access the content on a website the navigation is important so the question was to see if the navigation was easy or if it was very difficult.
My question which said “Did the layout of the website appeal to you?” was asked to see if the content of the page was appealing to the audience. The content would be the words, images, colours, fonts, etc. The question under was not compulsory to answer it was asked to see what people thoughts where and to explain their stance on the layout website.
I decided to make my questions easier by asking if the website was easy to use on a scale from 1 to 5. This was to simplify my question.

My next question was asked to see what people saw on the website and what stood out on the website. Many of the websites features consisted of captions, images and colours, etc. This question was directed to the people answering to explain why they saw stand out of all the features on the website.
My next question was asked about the construction of captions and texts on the website. I wanted to see what people thought of the content being presented.
The question about the website tools was talking about the tools on the page which was related more to the construction of the website than content of the page. The tools on the page is important because it part of the navigation and part of the frame work of the website.

On many websites there are categories which show different products and information. So I asked this question to see if the website had a good menu/category system in place and for people taking part in the questionnaire to explain their answer.

I then asked another scale question but asking how useful the website is. This was asked to see if people thought that the way the website was constructed was useful and if the reason for it to bed created was for filling its purpose.

The last question said “who would you recommend this websites to?”, I constructed this question to see which type of person would be recommended this website. It was asked last because I wanted to put the more important questions ahead for people to answer.

The results:

63.6% of the audience is aged from 14-18, while the remaining 36.4 were between the ages of 19-23. For my next question I asked for peoples genders, majority of people took the questionnaire were female by 54.5%. Just below half were male responses by 45.5%.
The target audience for this website is mainly young people who are under the age of 30 for most of the products.  From the results most of my responses showed that the people who took the questionnaire were young.

Form the responses 54.5% were middle class. Working class responses were 36.4% and the remaining 9.1% was underclass. From the next question asked the answers people gave were that they had not seen the website before the questionnaire. 54.5% answered no while 45.5% answered yes.

There were mixed responses from the people who took part in the questionnaire. A lot of the responses were saying that the layout looked good from their first impression. A lot negative feedback said that the layout was confusing or that the items being shown were seen as being fake. The next question about navigation on the website was a mix of different responses.  36.4% of people said the navigation on the website was ‘okay’. While 27.3% of people believed it was ‘easy’ and another 27.3% said it was ‘really easy’. Only a small 9% responded saying it was difficult.

There were mixed responses from the people who took part in the questionnaire. A lot of the responses were saying that the layout looked good from their first impression. A lot negative feedback said that the layout was confusing or that the items being shown were seen as being fake. I related this question to the construction of content. Most people related their responses to the layout of the website.

The question which I asked if the website was good or not. The question was not compulsory to answer. The answers received from people mainly were about how the pictures could improve and the website needed more colour. My next question was to see how easy it was to use the website from a scale from 1 to 5. The majority of responses suggested that they were in-between the website being good and bad. One response was a 4 and four responses where a 5.
The reason why I asked this question was because I wanted to see what peoples opinion was on for the selection of the content. The very purpose of the website is for people to select the product they want view and buy it. The way I made this question was to make it easier for people to give an answer and for me to collect the results.

My question on the features of the website had a wide variety of different answers. The common answer was the adverts. An interesting response was the amazon feel.
My next question asked the audience what they thought on the captions and texts. A lot of the positive feedback mainly was about the size of the captions and that they were readable. There were a few comments which were critical. The small minority of people said that it needed more colour and that the texts where ‘plain’.

The question asked was regarding tools used on the webpage. My findings showed that the common answer was that the tools were good. A response stated that the search tool was easy to access. My next question that I asked was related to the tools on the website. I asked if the categories on the website easy or hard to use. The common answer was that the categories where ‘easy’ to use. A critic said that the categories needed more colour.

The media products are aimed at the target audience so one way which the creators get there audience products is by placing categories on the website to help products in their own sub –categories. My question was to see if the way the categories applied on the website was what the target audience wanted. Also to see if it was hard or easy to use.

My second last question was asking if the website was useful and the participants in the survey answered using a scale. 27.3% people said that the website was more useful by having putting down a 4. Majority of the participants 54.5% voted a 3 which would be balanced between being useless and really useful. My last question asked people who took the questionnaire who they would recommend the website to. Majority of people who took part said they would recommend the website to friends. Around 18% said that they would recommend it to their parents. A small minority of people who are 9% said they would recommend it to their peers.

Overall people like the website and there was a lot of positive feedback from people who took part in the survey. There were still a few critical points made for the improvement of the website. I believe next time if I was to do a survey I would ask more questions and ask people who took part to explain their positions a bit more.

This shows us that in conclusion that most features of the design of the website met with the audience's specific needs.

From my findings I have found out that the media products on the website are for a young audience as the data shows from my research. The way the website reached out to its audience is by using images and the layout. This was seen from the analysis where many people repeated that the layout and images was what stood out.

Presentation

Synopsis / Report

Synopsis on research for Django and Avengers -

Before any product is made there needs to be an audience for this. In film companies such as FAME and organisations such as Arts Council/Target Group Index do research into film products through surveying audiences at cinema's to understanding trends in the market.
What we’ve found is that the audience for Django unchained come under several categories, age above 18 as this is what it was rated, fans of films made by Quentin Tarantino/ starring Jamie Foxx and fans of the action, drama and historical calibre. They are mostly mainstreamers and fit the psychographic of reformers; those who seek for enlightenment. This is relevant as this film is based on historical real life person however the film itself is fiction relating to real time events for example slavery and referencing the civil war. It has gore and action enhanced by director Tarantino.

Primary Data:

The data collected from our questionnaire:
From the data received the majority of our audience was female. The film Django was for a male audience because of the protagonist and the storyline. The film Avengers is for a more mixed audience which has characters that have different genders. The age range was mainly around 16-21 for the avengers this age range was right because the film received a PG-13 but the film had content that was for all ages especially for fans of the comic and previous films. The results show us that the age range was right for Django unchained because the film was made for a young mature audience around the age of 18 and 80% of people were around the age of 18.

Our results showed that 20% of our audience was British Asian Bangladeshi, the other 20% was traveller/Irish.  In terms of the Geodemographic we see that the main target audience from Django was not the same with our results. Django films audience was mainly people with African heritage. With this result we see that it’s different. The occupation part of the questionnaire shows that most people are students. From Django Unchanged we see that the target audience was people who worked on working class. Majority of the people in the results were students only 20% were part time.

The opinions people had on gore/nude/sexual scenes were all similar and were not very different. Majority of our audience was mainstream. The films such as Django unchanged and Avengers age of Ultron was made for a mainstream audience. Only 20% seemed as if they would be a niche audience.

Majority of our audience go to cinema once a month. This type of audience is ideal for both films such as Django and Avengers. For the next question regarding if the trailer was seen for Django we see that at least 30% of people did not see the trailer. However 70% did this shows us that Django’s marketing was good and the trailer was able to show a lot of people.

The ‘Guardian’ and the ‘Telegraph’ both rated the film Django as 5/5. From the results from our survey we find that only 30% of the audience said it was 5/5. Only 40% of the audience said 4/5 while the remaining 30% said 3/5 which would be an average. This would be contrary to many of the other reviews from professional outlets and websites.

Secondary data:

Django Unchained was Tarantino's highest-grossing film it made worldwide total gross of $425,368,238. It had surpassed the 2009 movie ‘Inglorious Bastards’ which made $321.4 million worldwide. Avenger’s age of Ultron had more money in their budget which was around $267.4 million (Net) while Django unchained budget was $100 million. Django had a better rating than Avengers however Avengers made more money back after release. Avengers had a much larger audience compered to Django. Age of Ultron was a second instalment to the Avengers series while Django was only one film so far.

Audience theory

Unit 6: Critical Approaches report

Media products are defined by their audience. An audience can control wither a film is going to become a failure a success . If a company was to publish a book and nobody buys it or it does not have a target audience then it will fail. An entire industry is made just off defining an audience. The data this industry produces helps producers or publishers know there audience is and what they buy and interested in and why they are interested. It can open up ways to advertise products and make a target audience.

Audience theory is made up of many other theories. The theories can be applied to show the relationship between texts and audience.
Hypodermic needle model; this theory is the belief that media outlets presents messages to the audience directly. The theory itself proposes that an audience would do what ever they are told without thinking about it. However the theory has been seen as inadequate and more complex theories have been made regarding the audiences ability to make decisions rationally based on their own experiences.

Uses and gratifications theory: This theory is used to understand the purpose behind why people consume different types of media and where they would find them. The idea behind the theory is to see how audience would spend time and energy to find media that will match their needs. Uses and gratification assumes that the audience take up an active role in understanding and integrating media content into their own lives. Contrary to the Hypodermic needle model theory which assumes audiences are passive. The theory developed in the 1940s and several different theorists have developed the idea behind it. Another way of saying this is by looking how people respond and interact with media rather than just looking at its effect.

Reception theory: we see that this theory looks at how media text (content) is encoded and decoded. The main belief of the theory is that creators encode their text and that the audience decode the text that come from the creators. The second part to the theory is the way the audience decode the message behind the content. It is split in to 3 different interpretations;

• Preferred: when the message behind the video is accepted by an audience and is agreed with. For example a fan watching ‘Made in Chelsea’ would understand what's going on in the show and would relate and believe what is happening.

• Negotiated: This is when the message behind the video is understood and that an individual would modify its meaning to them self regarding their own personal experiences, interests and position. For example someone watching a love film and feels as if the character and the self are similar but different at the same time.

• Oppositional: This is when the audience individual understands the context of the text/content and oppose it and has his/her own view.

Passive or active consumption: passive audiences do not apply their own experiences or their own thoughts to the  media they are consuming. This relates back to the Hypodermic needle model which assumes audiences are passive.
Active audience apply their own thoughts and experiences to the media they consume. This relates back to the Uses and gratifications theory, in which the audience are more active in their media consumption.

Effects debates: There are debates wither or not media effects an audience. The culmination theory which relates to this suggests that exposure to violent games or films once would not cause someone to be violent. However long term exposure can cause people to slowly become violent in real life and in the media. The same can be said with sexual content and other relatable  things.

Effects of advertising: Adverts is the type of media where more would view it. The way an advert works it gives a message to buy the product and the audience viewing it in theory if interested would buy it. The reason why companies advertise is because the brand will have more awareness  and will increase sales and in turn companies would profit. Due to the effects that advertising has governments have set rules. For example in the U.K, Advertising standards Authority is responsible for the rules that are made for advertisers. They monitor ads and look for complaints against ads if their misleading.

Health concerns: According to  Pediatrics (Vol. 118 No. 6 December 1, 2006
pp. 2563 -2569) an average young person views “ more than 40,000 ads per year on television alone...” we see from this that young people view many ads and among those ads there are inappropriate ads they can view and can cause problems regarding health.  It is an exposure to smoking, alcohol use, obesity and poor nutrition. Children can be influenced by watching ads and it can cause negative long term effects especially if they see the same add repeated. This problem for example could be related to the Hypodermic needle mode theory and how children can be seen more passive than active.

Censorship debates: censorship is to stop a certain type of speech or any other type of communication which may be considered harmful, sensitive and inconvenient as ruled by the government or controlling body. Content can be censored in protection of a minority group or to stop something that is illegal like videos of individuals taking drugs or child pornography.

Responses: An audience can respond to media they have consumed by using social media like twitter. People can even go on TV shows and news stories and have their say. To respond to a certain type of media it is known as Participatory media. This type of media includes blogs, video blogs, podcasts, tagging and social bookmarking.

Cultural competence: Media texts requires the audience to have some cultural understanding to be able to understand them. At a minimal level this could mean being able to read the language the magazine or text that's been written. A deeper level of understanding is being able to acknowledge signs and symbols and communicate ideas. It is easy to understand in a culture that is familiar but it is difficult to understand in foreign cultures. For example a suit can represent being formal. Another example would be having a rare classic car to show wealth.

Fan culture: Certain media products are popular amongst its audience. The audience decide to take part in an  active role in already created product but with their own ideas and input. This is very common with video games and even marvel films like avengers. A lot of fans make their own stories, scripts, TV shows and books.  The culture of fan culture has been around for a long time however ever since the steady rise of social media fans have been able to make and meet new communities. They also have their own networks dedicated to their favourite media product.

Focus Group

My group and I. decided that we would ask a range of question to a group of people who would be the target audience for the two films that we selected. We asked a range of questions with detailed long responses.

At the end of the focus group we exported the video and wrote down the responses we received.

Some of the questions we asked:

  • How old are you?
  • Do you read comic books?
  • Are you a fan of the marvel?
  • What do you think of the cast?

Unit 6 -- Task 1 / statistical data on product(s) (Secondary research)

Statistical data on ‘Django unchained’
Sources:

Quentin Tarantino is a famous and well known director. He wrote and directed many films and Django was one of his many movies with a black protagonist. We see that from the statistics that many African Americans where in favour of the film. According to the Hollywood reporter “Opening on Christmas Day, 42 percent of Django's initial audience was black, according to exit polling data.” We see that Quentin Tarantino audience had a huge number of black Americans who made up a lot of the numbers of viewers during the release.
Original Budget for ‘Django unchained’ is estimated around $100 million. Opening weekend in the United States created around $30,688,000 (USA) (30 December 2012) (3,010 Screens) according to IMDb. After 143 days the film ended in American theatrical run on May 16, 2013 it had the estimated gross of $162,805,434 in North America. In Europe it grossed in Germany alone of $51,597,323 which was the most out of the many European countries. Other counties such as France grossed around $37,297,979 and the UK made $24,893,462. As of 2013, Django Unchained became Tarantino's highest-grossing film it made worldwide total gross of $425,368,238. It had surpassed the 2009 movie ‘Inglorious Basterds’ which made $321.4 million worldwide.
From the data received from IMDb majority of people who rated the movie was male looking at the statistics. We see that 675956 are male while only 135302 is female. The film is primarily made for a male audience.

Age rating is 18 so the target age would be a mature audience.

We also see from the movie that the protagonist is a straight male and this suggest the target audience sexual orientation is heterosexual.

Joss Whedon was the director of ‘The Avengers’ which was based off the comic book made by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. This film was awaited for long time and the expectations was high. The audience was roughly 59% male. 41% of the audience was made up of 25 year olds and older. 12% of the audience where believed to be teenagers.
